NYC’s Got Talent

Times Square, July 2014

Times Square seems to have been designed to command one’s attention, from the massive ad-filled screens to the shops themselves. Its too easy to spend a lot of time here, as in addition to the shops and screens, the streets are filled with talented individuals, each in pursuit of money and recognition.

The most astonishing of all was a woman, completely naked except for her practically absent briefs and the paint that covered every inch of her body. She had the American flag painted on her and with this she was charging people five dollars to have a photo taken with her.

Ballerina – Central Park, August 2014

This woman appeared out of nowhere, dressed in White from head to toe. Even her face was powdered. It was immediately evident that she was about to do some ballet act of some kind. Instead of starting some previously rehearsed dance act, she simply waited for people passing by to award her with the suggested $5 before immediately coming to life by gracefully dancing for every person who donates money.

New York City – At First Glance

After a long and exhausting ten hour flight from London, it was so exciting to land at JFK Airport in New York City. Amazing views from below could be seen as the plane prepared itself for landing, from above, amidst the all the tress, lavish houses could be spotted. Each one had a sky blue swimming pool.

Coming from cooler weather, the hot, thick air took some getting used to. However it was a pleasant change to have warm temperature, uncompromised by a cold wind. Outside the airport the notorious yellow cabs awaited to whisk me away to my new home. It was so exciting to be in a yellow cab for the first time! to add to this excitement, the cab even had a small TV screen and a card reader.

The city looked so breathtaking, around 8 o’clock it was slightly dark so everything was lit by various coloured lights from various buildings. Despite being thoroughly exhausted, it was impossible to look away, I absorbed every tiny detail with growing fascination, and I was very keen to get out there and explore!

Although renewed excitement remained dominant, I could not deny the mild disappointment I felt when I took to exploring the neighbourhood I was staying at. It seemed a tad run down and very far from the glamour I had envisioned. The subway only added to my dismay, saying it looked filthy would be an understatement. It was boiling hot and the humidity seemed to be provoking a fainting spell. However the closer I got to downtown manhattan the better I felt. It was cleaner, there were nice shops, lots of shops in fact!!! Times Square is a beauty. Although I came to find that it is best appreciated from one angle, walking through it backwards could make it appear unimpressive.

The Playsuit, Fashion Innovation or Fashion Flaw?

MILLY Leather-trimmed twill playsuit
MILLY Leather-trimmed twill playsuit

The innovative inventor of the playsuit introduced a stunning garment that provides an alternative for women who favour one piece garments. However the playsuit’s benefits can easily be trumped by its limited functionality, which can be perceived to be an inconvenience.

All is well until one needs to urinate or remove the garment’s bottom half, as the whole garment needs to be removed in order to do so. This can be very tricky especially if the playsuit has intricate fastenings. These inconveniences always seem to vanish during the purchasing and wearing of the playsuit, yet they never fail to materialise further down the line. Which raises the question, is it worth all the hassle?

Raw Talent

As I walked through the highstreet, I found myself mesmerized by a talented artist who created the above piece using mere sand and water!

This truly demonstrates that, although creative talent and innovation may thrive through the use of sophisticated materials, it can also blossom from the most simplest materials.

All You Need Is Motivation

Image

I sat through the most motivating talk, in fact it was so motivating I couldn’t stop telling people all about it. It focused on three elements that help to determine how we feel and I think that is  important nowadays as it is all too easy to focus on negative things, it is nice to have a perspective that lets you see how things are at that present moment in time and how they could be.
